EU and Qatar Air Transport Agreement

Questions Articles
The conflict erupted when the authorities of several Middle Eastern countries declared that Qatar was supporting Islamist terrorist groups. Qatari authorities denied these allegations.

After that, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, and Yemen severed diplomatic relations with Qatar and, as a result, they closed their airspace to Qatari flagship air carrier – Qatar Airways.

The European Union has been involved into this conflict, but the situation has been changed.

The European Union and the State of Qatar have signed a comprehensive air transport agreement improving the rules and standards of air services between Qatar and the EU. This agreement sets a new global target by committing both parties to fair competition, including social and environmental protection.

All EU airlines can operate direct flights from any EU airport to Qatar, and vice versa for Qatari airlines.

EU airports in Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands will gradually increase their passenger capacity until 2024.

Strict regulations on open and fair competition guarantee a level playing field.

The parties have recognized the importance of social issues, agreed to cooperate and improve their respective social and labor laws and policies in line with their international commitments.

The Agreement will facilitate people-to-people contacts and expand commercial opportunities and trade. Going beyond transportation rights, the EU and Qatar Agreement will provide a unified set of rules, high standards, and a platform for future cooperation on a wide range of aviation issues.
